The settle is constructed of solid oak panelled timbers. The back consists of five raised fielded inset panels. Further fielded panels are also visible to the bottom of the seat and the sides of the settle. The two lids in the seat are hinged with hand beaten forged iron hinges. The inside of the box settle is ideal for storing shoes and wellies in the hallway. The settle boasts down swept shaped oak arms to the sides, pegged construction. The settle features the original polish and patination and thus the colour of this settle is superb. Interestingly, this settle was used in a Sherlock Holmes TV series that was filmed in Leek, on the Staffordshire moorlands in Derbyshire!
Condition Report:
The item is in excellent condition and is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The settle has been strengthened with steel rods from the front to the back under the seat a very long time ago and there the back panels have been tightened a very long time ago. The iron hinges are in good working order. Free of woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use.
