Antique French Louis Xvi Revival Mahogany Bedroom Suite with Wardrobe & Bed C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptionally decorative antique French Louis XVI Revival three-piece bedroom suite dating from circa 1900, comprising a large mirrored wardrobe, matching double bed and bedside pot cupboard, all conceived as a unified suite and richly embellished with parquetry veneers and gilt-metal mounts.

The impressive wardrobe is dominated by two full-length mirrored doors beneath a sweeping architectural cornice, crowned by a finely modelled gilt-metal floral wreath and ribbon crest. Further gilt mounts, floral paterae and delicate ribbon-tied details punctuate the façade, while the warm mahogany-toned veneers are arranged in carefully matched geometric patterns. Internally, the wardrobe provides generous storage with shelving, drawers and open hanging space.

The matching bed is equally imposing. Its tall headboard and substantial footboard feature beautifully arranged geometric veneer work framed by moulded borders, with a central gilt-bronze swag and pendant mount creating a particularly elegant focal point. The shaped crest echoes the wardrobe, visually tying the suite together.

Completing the set is the matching bedside cupboard, raised on turned supports above a useful undertier and decorated with corresponding gilt-metal mounts and parquetry.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI Revival furniture, popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, draws inspiration from classical antiquity. Key features include symmetrical proportions, straight lines, fluted turned legs, neoclassical bronze mounts, and intricate marquetry or parquetry wood veneers.

High-quality suites from circa 1900 were predominantly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or kingwood, complemented by decorative wood veneers. Ormolu (gilded bronze) mounts, bevelled glass mirrors, and imported marble tops for bedside cabinets were standard features.

Authentic pieces feature traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetail joints, heavy solid wood framing under fine veneers, original gilded brass or bronze mounts, and authentic age marks on drawer linings or back panels.

To integrate a rich mahogany suite into a contemporary home, balance the deep timber tones with crisp white or muted neutral walls. Pair with simple linen bedding and modern lighting to create a refined mix of traditional craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Dust mahogany timber regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish annually to protect the veneer. Clean gilt bronze mounts gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that could strip the finish.
