Antique William & Mary Oak Side Table C.1690

17th century
Description

A late 17th century oak side table of honest provincial character, the top formed of two thick oak boards with moulded edges over a single frieze drawer with period correct brass drop handles, all raised on turned legs united by stretchers.

Very good antique condition, displaying a deep, rich patina with honest surface wear, historic timber abrasion, and age-consistent shrinkage. The original drawer runs smoothly following historic runner repairs, with the carcass benefiting from discreet internal frame strengthening. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1690.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating between 1689 and 1702, William & Mary furniture is defined by Dutch and French influences, featuring slender proportions, turned legs, ball feet, teardrop brass handles, and intricate stretchers for structural stability.

Tables from this period were predominantly constructed using solid native English oak, joined with hand-cut mortise and tenon joints held together by wooden dowels, often finished with cast brass teardrop drop-handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-carved joinery pegs, asymmetric drawer construction with thick dovetailed or nailed joints, uneven wear on stretchers, and naturally oxidised oak timber.

An antique oak side table serves as a accent piece alongside minimalist modern sofas, in narrow hallways as a console, or as a bedside table, creating textural contrast against neutral walls.

Maintain oak furniture by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement.
