Marlborough Antiques & Interiors has dated this French Giltwood Wall Mirror to the 19th Century.
The architectural arched mirror is surrounded by an elaborate carved frame composed of scrolling foliage, floral ornament, trailing leaves and ribbon-like details. The exuberant crest is particularly accomplished, with opposing scrolls centred by a large stylised acanthus motif and suspended floral ornament. The lower corners terminate in boldly carved scrolling elements, giving the mirror a pleasing sense of balance and movement.

What makes this example especially attractive is its untouched, time-worn appearance. Areas of the original carved frame and gesso remain visible beneath layers of old paint, original and later gilding. These surfaces have naturally rubbed and mellowed over many years, revealing warm tones of gold, cream, silvered-grey and the underlying ground. Rather than detracting from the mirror, this variation gives it tremendous depth and character and creates the wonderfully relaxed, rustic appearance so desirable in an antique decorative interior.

The frame surrounds a later mirror plate, bordered by further mirrored slips, which lighten the composition and contrast beautifully with the aged carved decoration.
Dating to circa 1840, this is a highly decorative French mirror whose generous proportions and beautifully weathered surface give it considerable presence without appearing overly formal. It would work particularly well above a console or fireplace, or as a statement mirror in an entrance hall, drawing room or bedroom.

A very attractive example, combining French 19th-century craftsmanship with an exceptionally decorative, naturally distressed surface that would be difficult to reproduce convincingly today.
French, circa 1840
