Napoleon III Chateau Wall Mirror, Gold Leaf & Gesso, Circa 1850

19th century
For Sale by Spinka & Co
Description

K0467 An unusual French 19th-century wall mirror featuring an elegant cream and water-gilded gold leaf frame. The shaped and beaded border is crowned by an elaborate, deeply carved openwork crest showcasing a central scallop shell flanked by sweeping floral and foliage motifs. The mirror retains its original thick, bevelled-edge glass, which displays a beautifully aged foxing that adds authentic antique character and depth. Having been gently conserved, the frame preserves a desirable portion of its original gold leaf gilding alongside an original cream finish on gesso. Fitted with a four wall brackets and replacement backboard for structural integrity, this striking piece comes in home ready condition. It serves as a commanding focal point for an entryway, mantle, or formal living space. c1850

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the Second Empire between 1852 and 1870, Napoleon III mirrors are characterised by ornate revivalist styles, frequently incorporating Rococo and Neoclassical elements such as sculpted gesso crests, floral flourishes, and lavish gold leaf finishes.

These mirrors typically feature a carved pine or lime-wood frame covered with gesso, a plaster mixture used to model fine relief details. Thin leaves of gold were then applied over a tinted clay bole base and polished or burnished.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved wooden frames, visible red or yellow bole clay under worn gilding, natural oxidation or speckling on the mirror glass, and solid wooden backboards constructed with hand-cut nails or joinery.

Positioning a large gilded mirror above a fireplace, console table, or hallway bench creates a refined focal point, balancing classic carved ornamentation against minimalist modern furnishings and clean neutral walls.

Dust the ornate frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush to prevent chipping delicate gesso. Clean the mirror plate with a lightly dampened microfibre cloth, ensuring liquid spray does not touch the gilded frame edges.
