Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Neoclassical giltwood mirrors from the mid-to-late eighteenth century feature classical architectural motifs such as urn finials, gadrooned rims, and leaf ornamentation. The frames were traditionally carved from timber and finished with gold leaf over gesso.

These frames were typically carved from softwoods or hardwoods, covered in layers of gesso (a chalk and glue mix), and coated with coloured clay bole before thin sheets of gold leaf were applied. The reflective plates were created using early glass-making methods, often incorporating mercury tin amalgams.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved irregularities on the reverse, signs of original joint construction, and red or grey clay bole showing through worn gilded areas. The original glass typically displays subtle distortion, greyish speckling, or foxing rather than uniform modern silvering.

A carved giltwood mirror acts as a focal point when hung above a modern mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. The warm tone of the gilded finish contrasts effectively against dark painted walls or contemporary minimalist backdrop settings.

Dust the carved frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting loose gold leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes entirely, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso and cause irreversible finish damage.
