Georgian Chippendale Period Mahogany Chest on Chest

18th century
Description

An exceptional example of a superb quality English Georgian, Chippendale period antique chest on chest with beautiful quilted figured mahogany to the graduating drawer fronts. Each drawer is adorned with its original Rococo style brass gilt swan neck handles and key escutcheons and they are finished with cock bead moulded edge.

The cornice is of Greek key design and the canted corners to the top section have blind fretwork decoration with double lambs tongue moulding to the lower section terminating to original ogee shaped bracket feet.

All the drawers are oak lined and retain their original locks and come with a working key. The chest on chest or tallboy retains its lovely colour and original finish which has been cleaned and waxed.

The chest comes in two sections which makes it easy to move and place in a room. The lower height of this piece of furniture means it can be accommodated in most homes.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is an 18th-century furniture design featuring two stacked chests of drawers. Originating in the Georgian period, this vertical storage design maximized floor space while displaying fine cabinetry techniques.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, featuring oak or pine drawer linings. Cast brass swan-neck handles, dustboards between drawers, and hand-cut dovetail joints are standard construction features.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-sawn drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, and period brass hardware. The timber shows natural oxidisation on unpolished surfaces, and the structure separates into two distinct upper and lower sections.

A Georgian tallboy serves as a focal point in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway. Complementing the dark timber tone with neutral wall palettes, contemporary artwork, or simple ceramic decorative accessories helps integrate the historical piece into modern living spaces.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer splitting, or sun bleaching.
