Description

A fine mahogany serpentine chest of drawers retaining its original Rococo brass cast handles;  the top and drawer fronts veneered in figured mahogany.  Good quality oak drawer linings and original shaped bracket feet.  Circa 1760

We deal in 18th and early 19th century furniture, barometers and clocks. We choose our stock for its originality and for the quality of its colour, patination and design.

We are members of the BADA. We do not exhibit at fairs preferring to deal from our Cambridge shop where we hold Open Weekends from time to time.

FAQs

A serpentine chest of drawers features a wave-like contour across its front face, curving convexly in the centre and concavely towards the corners. Popularised during the 18th century Georgian era, this design required advanced cabinet-making techniques to shape the carcass and drawer fronts.

Cabinet makers primarily utilised solid mahogany or oak for the structural carcass, frequently applying figured flame mahogany veneers to the drawer fronts. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for internal drawer linings, complemented by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer sides, hand-planed secondary timbers, and natural wood shrinkage consistent with age. Original brass handles often leave distinct cast impressions or oxidisation marks on the mahogany surface over time.
