Art Deco Cold Painted Bronze Sculpture.

1900 - 1920
Description

A rare and superb cold painted bronze sculpture by Édouard Guy Compte du Passage (1872-1925)

The sculpture is cast in bronze depicting a kingfisher sitting in reeds as though he were watching the water for fish. It is raised on the original black navette shaped marble base and is signed E Guy on the bronze.

Edouard Guy Compte du Passage is well known for his sculptures of animals and was compared favourably to Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875)

However, towards the end of his life he embraced the Art Deco movement.

This piece is possibly his only Art Deco bronze which he produced before he died in 1925.

It is of a good size and makes a striking impression. Circa 1920-1925

We can deliver in UK mainland and can calculate the cost for International delivery.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco sculpture, prominent during the 1920s and 1930s, is defined by streamlined forms, geometric abstraction, and stylised natural motifs, frequently depicting wildlife, dancers, or athletic figures.

Cold-painted bronzes are cast in bronze and subsequently decorated with layers of enamel or oil-based paint without firing, allowing for detailed polychrome finishes on intricate figurines.

Authentic pieces often display crisp cast details, subtle wear to the paint layers revealing the underlying bronze patina, foundry markings, and original stone or marble bases.

Position the piece on a polished sideboard, mantelpiece, or desk where focused lighting highlights its metallic patina and sculptural silhouette alongside contemporary decor.

Dust the surface gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding solvents, water, or abrasive polishes that could lift delicate cold-painted details or alter the bronze patina.
