A Bronze Study of an Albatross on the Wing Above a Crested Wave Mounted on a Black Marble Plinth Circa 1930

1920 - 1940
Description

This most eye catching and stylish large art deco bronze study depicts a large albatross swooping in strong winds above a choppy sea over a crested wave.

This very decorative Art Deco piece of sculpture is very solidly cast in heavy bronze which has a most pleasing cold painted sage green finish which is richly patinated with darker shades.

The cold painted finish is in very good condition with only a few minor age related small signs of wear. The figure is made in two separate pieces where the bird can be lifted off the wave where it locates onto a shaped bronze peg which fits into a matching hole.

The sculpture is fully signed Dautrive on the reverse of the wave. The renowned French artist, Emile Dautrive, was active from the late 1920s through the 1930s producing iconic Art Deco sculptures. It is mounted onto a very large and heavy cut and polished black marble plinth which is designed to counterbalance the heavy bronze bird which gives the impression of almost floating in an impossible position. A very clever design and a beautiful sculpture.

French circa 1930.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco bronze sculptures from this era often feature stylised, streamlined forms that emphasise movement, speed, and natural forms. Seabirds, greyhounds, and panthers were popular subjects capturing the dynamic aesthetic of the early 20th century.

Sculptures were cast using the lost-wax or sand casting method, followed by hand-chasing to refine detail. They were frequently treated with chemical patination to produce green, brown, or verdigris finishes and mounted onto marble or onyx plinths.

Authentic period pieces display crisp casting details, natural age-related wear or oxidisation in crevices, and authentic foundry marks or artist signatures. The weight of solid cast bronze paired with heavy stone plinths also indicates period construction.

Place the sculpture on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or desk where light can highlight the patinated surface. Pairing bronze with clean architectural lines or contemporary minimalist decor creates a refined contrast.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth or soft brush. Avoid liquid metal polishes or harsh chemical solvents, applying a light coat of neutral microcrystalline wax annually to protect the original patina.
