Exceptional Mid-17th Century French Provincial Walnut Chest of Drawers

An outstanding and very rare mid-17th century French Louis XIV period walnut commode, masterfully crafted in the South of France near Uzès around 1650.

This exceptional provincial chest of drawers features a beautifully figured, rectangular moulded solid walnut plank top over three long, deep drawers. Each drawer retains its original hand forged brass handles and escutcheons, a wonderful testament to the piece’s authenticity and enduring quality. The commode stands on its original short block feet, with original planked back and panelled sides, giving it a completely honest, untouched character that is increasingly hard to find.

The walnut has developed a superb rich patina, the warm colour and gently undulating surface reflecting more than three centuries of careful use and polishing. The clean, rectilinear lines and classic proportions are characteristic of the Louis XIV period, while the subtle bow to the front adds softness and elegance to its strong architectural presence.

The three generous drawers offer ample, practical storage, yet the piece retains the refined simplicity and timeless sophistication associated with early French provincial furniture.
