Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early 17th century, coffers served as the primary storage units in English households for linens, clothing, and valuables. Often constructed from local oak, these joined chests were decorated with regional carving styles and served as significant pieces of domestic furniture.

Coffers from this era were traditionally constructed from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. The panels features relief carving, such as strapwork or foliate designs, and were fitted with hand-wrought iron hinges and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period coffers display irregular hand-planed timber surfaces, peg construction, and natural shrinkage cracks along the grain. Look for hand-carved decoration consistent with 17th-century motifs, historical ironwork, and genuine dark patination in non-exposed areas.

An antique coffer functions effectively as a focal piece in an entryway, at the foot of a bed, or along a hallway. Its rich timber texture pairs well with neutral textiles, stone flooring, and contemporary art to create visual contrast.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the coffer away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement and splitting.
