Antique Carved Oak Coffer

Description

A charming 19th century antique carved oak coffer. The antique oak coffer has a hinged lid (retaining its original hinges) that opens to reveal a spacious interior with a candle box to the right hand side. The antique oak coffer has a three panel front with beautiful carved detailing. Raised on a later four legged base with straight stretcher supports. A rather attractive example.

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition throughout with some signs of age. There is surface wear in places including age-related marks and scratches to the top, sides and front (pictured), further scratches and fading to the base (pictured). There is evidence of historic woodworm, however this is now long gone and has been fully treated as a precaution. The antique carved oak coffer remains structurally solid and sound. Overall, a charming example.

A coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid and panelled sides, historically used for storing linens, clothing, and valuables in European homes from the medieval period through the seventeenth century.

Traditional coffers were constructed from native solid timber, primarily oak, using pegged mortise and tenon joinery, frame-and-panel construction, and hand-carved relief decoration.
