Early 18th Century Walnut Chest on Stand Queen Anne Period C.1710

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A handsome early eighteenth-century walnut chest on stand dating from the Queen Anne period.

The upper section is fitted with three short drawers above three graduated long drawers beneath a moulded ogee cornice. The drawer fronts are veneered in beautifully figured walnut displaying attractive burr and feathered figuring, which has mellowed over the centuries to a rich, warm colour and patina. The chest is constructed in elm.

The chest stands upon an associated walnut stand fitted with three drawers and raised on turned baluster supports united by an elegant undulating stretcher, terminating in squat bun feet. Although associated, the stand is well proportioned to the upper section and creates an attractive and practical piece of early English furniture.

Retaining attractive period brass drop handles and escutcheons, the chest offers generous storage whilst remaining of manageable proportions. It would make an excellent statement piece in a bedroom, hallway or drawing room, combining early eighteenth-century character with everyday practicality.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 144cm

Width: 99cm

Depth: 54cm

CONDITION

Presented in good antique condition commensurate with its age of over 300 years. There are the expected marks, scratches, knocks and minor losses and repair to the veneer associated with centuries of use. The walnut has developed a rich, mellow patina with attractive colour throughout.

There is evidence of historic woodworm to both the chest and stand. The worm appears long inactive and does not affect the structural integrity of the piece. The handles are later. The drawers run well and the chest is solid, stable and ready for use.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Queen Anne chest on stand, originating from early eighteenth-century Britain, is a two-part storage cabinet featuring a main upper chest of drawers supported by a raised wooden stand with turned legs and shaped aprons.

These cabinets were primarily constructed with pine or oak carcass woods veneered in figured walnut, burr walnut, or feather-banding, completed with cast brass drop handles and turned timber legs.

Authentic pieces feature hand-sawn dovetail joints, thick hand-cut walnut veneers, oak or pine drawer linings, period-appropriate brass tear-drop pull handles, and iron key locks.

Place the piece against a neutral backdrop to highlight the rich tone of the walnut grain, balancing its historical proportions with understated modern lighting and contemporary ceramics.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading, and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year following the natural grain of the timber.
