Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking technique that creates subtle gradations of light and shade without using line hatching. Developed in the 17th century and perfected during the 18th century in Great Britain, it was the primary medium for reproducing painted portraits with rich, velvety tones.

Mezzotints were produced using a copper or steel plate, which was systematically roughening with a metal tool called a rocker. Ink was then applied to the plate and transferred onto thick, rag-based paper under high pressure using a rolling press.

Authentic period mezzotints display a distinct soft, burred texture in dark areas and smooth plate mark indentations along the margin paper. Under magnification, the print exhibits a fine, continuous dot grid created by the rocker tool rather than modern mechanical halftone dots.

Antique mezzotints work well as focal points when hung above sideboards or incorporated into classic gallery walls. Their monochrome tonal palette allows them to seamlessly complement both contemporary neutral interiors and traditional dark wood schemes.

Prints should be framed using acid-free mounting boards and placed behind UV-protective glass to prevent discolouration and fading. Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with fluctuating humidity levels.
