Mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking process where the copper plate is roughened with a rocker tool to create soft gradations of shade without line hatching. Developed in the seventeenth century, it reached its height in eighteenth-century Britain for reproducing oil portraits.

These prints were produced using engraved copper plates, heavy oil-based ink, and hand-pulled rag paper. They were often mounted in carved wooden frames with hand-applied gold leaf or dark lacquer finishes.
