Regency Mahogany Side Table Attributed to Gillows

19th century
Description

An exceptionally fine quality Regency rectangular shaped antique tray top work table by Gillows of Lancaster & London. The figured mahogany top is framed with a carved 'C' scroll design gallery and the frieze has beaded moulding with two concealed mahogany lined drawers to either side.

The table has two turned supports with double columns terminating to cabriole legs stood on original brass castors with central turned stretcher.

There is a pull out section to the frieze which was standard in this model of table for a work box to be added, however this table has never had one. The nice size of this table means it can be accommodated in most homes and used as a side table.

The table retains its original finish which has been cleaned and waxed.

A similar example of this table can be found in the Gillows of Lancaster & London book 1730 - 1840 by Susan E Stuart. Plate GG36

This design of table was retailed in London by Ferguson & Co.

Height - 74 cm (29 inches)

Width - 70 cm (27 ½ inches)

Depth - 49.5 cm (19 ½ inches)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency side tables from the early 19th century are recognised by their classical proportions, fine wood veneers such as Cuban mahogany, and details like turned end-supports, gallery tops, and brass mounts.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency era primarily utilised high-grade mahogany, rosewood, and zebrawood, often featuring hand-carved details, turned stretchers, and brass hardware or castors.

Authentic pieces produced by or attributed to Gillows of Lancaster display superior joinery, precisely cut dovetails, high-quality timber selection, and frequently stamped maker marks or recognisable turned leg profiles.

A Regency side table works well as an accent piece next to a contemporary sofa, placed in an entryway under a decorative mirror, or used as an elegant bedside stand to contrast clean, modern lines.

Mahogany furniture should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusted regularly with a soft dry cloth, and nourished periodically with a high-quality beeswax polish.
