Regency Miniature Mahogany Breakfast Table

19th century
Description

An Exceptional Quality Regency Period Miniature Mahogany Centre, Or Breakfast Table, Having Superbly Figured Circular Tilting Top Over Turned Central Column And Elegant Four Splay Base, Retaining Original Brass Castors.

Sometimes there is debate as to the original purpose of antique miniature furniture. There are predominantly two types, that which was made as an apprentice piece and that which was made as a salesmans sample piece. There was also some miniature furniture of a particular scale which would have been made as dolls house furniture.

This particular georgian miniature centre table was almost certainly made as a sample piece. That means that it would have been constructed effectively as a scale model in the workshop, using exactly the same painstaking methods as its full size counterparts, before being dispatched for months at a time with a selection of other miniature furniture items, in the travelling salesmans horse and cart. It would then be presented to prospective clients and orders for the full size variants taken.

Miniature breakfast tables like this are found in a wide variety of qualities, designs and sizes throughout the 19th century and were clearly very much in demand in terms of almost every grand, and even relatively modest house, requiring tables for the middle of their rooms.

This table dates to the early 19th century and is constructed from good quality mahogany timber, which retains a lovely rich colour and patina.

Still in full working order the table has been inspected by our skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is in good condition before being presented for sale.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency breakfast table is a circular or oval table, traditionally built with a central pedestal stem and a tilt-top mechanism that allowed the surface to be flipped vertically when not in use.

Cabinetmakers primarily used dense flame mahogany or rosewood, combining hand-turned pedestal stems with solid brass hardware, including caps and castors.

Authentic pieces from this era often feature hand-cut joints, brass catch mechanisms beneath the tabletop, splayed quadrufoil legs, and natural hand-polished patination.

Displaying a miniature piece on a sideboard, bookshelf, or mantelpiece adds visual interest and historical texture without occupying floor space.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the finish, keeping the item away from direct heat sources.
