A Regency Mahogany Side Table

19th century
Description

An elegant Regency side or work table in mahogany, the rectangular top with rounded corners and reeded edge over two drawers with the original turned mahogany handles, ebony stringing and brass key escutcheons and with dummy drawer fronts on the other side, and raised on slender turned and reeded supports terminating with brass castors. English, circa 1810.

Condition: Overall very good, the table is in excellent condition with no damage, restorations or significant marks, it stands well with no undue wobbling, the drawers run smoothly and the handles are the originals. Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency side tables, dating from the early 19th century (circa 18111830), are characterised by classical proportions, finely turned or tapered legs, and rich timber construction. They frequently served as versatile occasional tables, sewing work tables, or writing surfaces in private residences.

Primary cabinet timbers included flame mahogany, rosewood, and satinwood, often detailed with brass escutcheons, castors, or inlaid stringing. Drawer interiors from this era typically feature hand-cut dovetail joints paired with oak or pine drawer linings.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved structural details, slightly irregular hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer sides, and original brass castors or fittings. Natural oxidisation and age-related wear around the handles and feet also help distinguish original furniture from later reproductions.

Position the table alongside a sofa or armchair to add warm wood tones to a modern room scheme. Style the top surface with a contemporary ceramic lamp, art books, or small decorative items to create a balanced combination of traditional and modern elements.

Dust the wood regularly using a dry, soft cloth, and apply a pure beeswax polish once or twice per year to preserve the surface finish. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, open flames, and central heating radiators to minimise timber movement and cracking.
