An Edwardian Solid Oak Blanket Chest

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome Edwardian solid oak blanket chest dating from the early 20th century, crafted in the Jacobean Revival style from solid oak throughout. Featuring raised fielded panels to all four sides, this is an attractive freestanding piece that can be positioned anywhere in a room. The moulded top and base are enhanced with decorative bead-and-reel moulding, giving the chest a refined architectural appearance. The hinged lid opens to reveal a generous storage compartment, ideal for blankets, bed linen, toys, logs or general household storage. The lid is fitted with a support stay for safe and convenient opening. Its compact proportions make it a particularly versatile piece, equally suited to a bedroom, hallway, sitting room or at the foot of a bed.

Condition: Presented in good antique condition with a lovely warm oak patina and age-related wear consistent with its age. There is a small section of decorative beading missing from the rear of the chest, which does not detract from its appearance in use as it is not visible from the front. The chest remains solid, sturdy and ready for everyday use.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian oak blanket chests, produced between 1901 and 1910, often incorporated historical revival design elements from earlier Tudor and 17th-century Jacobean furniture. They feature sturdy joinery, recessed timber panelling, and restrained decorative mouldings suited to early 20th-century domestic interiors.

These chests were primarily crafted from solid English or European oak, utilizing frame-and-panel construction to allow for natural timber expansion. Common details include mortise and tenon joints, carved egg-and-dart or beaded mouldings, and heavy hinged wooden lids.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural aging to the oak, original hand-finished patination, and evidence of historical joinery techniques such as pegged joints or early machine-assisted dovetails. Look for light wear consistent with age inside the storage cavity and along the bottom rails.

An antique oak blanket chest works exceptionally well placed at the foot of a bed for linen storage or situated in a hallway as an entryway bench. Combining the warm wood tones with contemporary neutral upholstery creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood moisture and finish. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping or drying.
