Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coffer is a wooden chest with a hinged lid, historically constructed in the 17th century for storing linens, clothing, and domestic valuables. They were foundational household furniture items, built primarily using joined oak framework and panelled sections.

These chests were typically constructed from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs. Construction usually incorporates panelled sides and tops alongside hand-forged iron hinges and lock plates.

Authentic period coffers feature signs of hand-planed timber, wooden peg joinery, and hand-forged ironwork rather than modern machine-made nails or screws. The oak exhibits deep surface oxidation, authentic wear on the base, and slight irregular shrinkage appropriate to its age.

An oak coffer functions effectively positioned at the foot of a bed, set as a centrepiece coffee table, or placed in an entryway for storage and seating. The deep timber tones offer architectural grounding against contemporary neutral interior schemes.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically to nourish the surface and preserve the patina. Avoid placing the piece directly adjacent to radiators or in conditions with extreme moisture fluctuations.
