Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chests of drawers from the Georgian and Regency eras, spanning the late eighteenth to early nineteenth centuries, are characterised by symmetrical proportions, clean lines, and high-quality hardwood construction. Common features include flame mahogany veneers, cockbeaded drawer edges, and solid bracket or turned feet.

Craftsmen during this period primarily utilised solid mahogany or oak for the structural framing, applying decorative flame mahogany veneers to exterior drawer fronts. Drawer linings were frequently constructed from pine or oak, fitted with hand-cut dovetail joints and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces from around 1810 typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-sawn secondary timber on the drawer undersides, and period-correct steel locks or brass oval backplate handles. Natural oxidisation and subtle timber shrinkage on unpainted surfaces also indicate genuine age.

A mahogany chest of drawers provides visual weight and depth in modern bedrooms, hallways, or living rooms. Positioning contemporary artwork or modern lighting directly above the timber surface creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and current design trends.

Position mahogany furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer lifting, or colour fading. Regular dusting with a clean, dry lint-free cloth and occasional application of natural beeswax polish will protect the wood surface and finish.
