Elkington, Mason & Co.

was a prominent 19th-century English silver manufacturing partnership based in Birmingham, operating under this specific name from 1842 to 1861. Founded by George Richards Elkington and his brother Henry, the firm revolutionized the silver industry by patenting the world's first commercial electroplating process in 1840.

The partnership with wealthy pen-manufacturer and financier Josiah Mason in 1842 fuelled a massive expansion of the company's Newhall Street works, pushing the firm into the mass production of affordable electroplated jewellery, flatware, and ornate Victorian silver pieces. The company held multiple Royal Warrants (including for Queen Victoria) and became known for masterpieces like the electrotype reproduction of the Jerningham Wine Cooler.

When Josiah Mason departed in 1861, the business reverted to its original name, Elkington & Co., and continued operating independently until being absorbed into British Silverware Ltd. in the 1960s

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian silver wine cooler is a decorative container produced during the nineteenth century, designed to hold ice and chill bottles of wine or champagne during dining.

Antique champagne buckets were typically crafted from solid sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver, often featuring a gilded wash on the interior to guard against corrosion.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature stamped maker marks, registration marks, or date letters on the rim or underside, accompanied by hand-engraved details and cast metal fittings.

An antique wine cooler functions as a centerpiece on a dining table or sideboard, a luxury bar cart addition, or a structural vessel for floral arrangements.

Electroplated silver should be cleaned using a soft cloth and specialised non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding submersion in water to preserve the electroplated surface and interior gilding.
