Antique Victorian Mahogany Writing Table C.1870

19th century
Description

A Victorian mahogany writing table, the beautifully sun-bleached top with moulded edge housing its original richly patinated black leathercloth writing surface set over two flush frieze drawers, all raised on four turned tapering legs.

The table carries an honest sense of understated utility, anchored by the exceptional survival of the heavily patinated writing surface which remains remarkably solid, stable and incredibly tactile.

Very good untouched antique condition, the mahogany retains a remarkable sun-mellowed palette, while the original leathercloth top exhibits an incredibly attractive settled micro-crazed character. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1870.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the mid-to-late 19th century, a Victorian writing table typically features a solid mahogany frame, turned legs, frieze drawers for storing stationery, and often a leather-inset writing surface.

These tables were constructed primarily from Cuban or Honduran mahogany, with hand-dovetailed drawer linings made of pine or oak, solid brass or wooden knob handles, and a gilded leather writing inset.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, turned leg detailing, and authentic signs of age such as natural patination and minor wear around the leg collars and feet.

A Victorian writing desk can serve as a slim home office workstation, a hall console table, or a dressing table, paired with contemporary minimalist lighting and neutral accent seating to balance historical character with modern functionality.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, while avoiding liquid cleaners or direct sunlight to prevent the leather inset from drying out or fading.
