Very Large 19th Century Ebonised Italian Wall Mirror - No7

19th century
Description

We have been fortunate to get hold of some truly stunning 19th century Italian frames that we have added high quality 6mm mirror plate too.

These mirrors make incredible features on any wall in a great number of interiors. The design is arguably quite contemporary which is why I love this particular style of frame.

The moulding is incredibly fine and when I spoke to my restorer about these he informed me just how hard it is to make this moulding so it really is a testament to the crafts people of the time that created these.

This example is the largest we have had and has one of the deepest frames. The ebonised finish is strong and has a lovely sheen to it. Crisp detail in the moulding as well.

135cm by 104cm

Can be hung either portrait or landscape.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century Italian ebonised mirrors are characterised by dark-stained wooden frames designed to simulate ebony wood, often paired with architectural mouldings, profile stepped borders, and clean rectangular forms influenced by classical design.

These mirrors were constructed using native softwoods or hardwoods such as pine, walnut, or lime, which were stained or lacquered black. The reflective element typically comprised silvered or mercury glass set within deep moulded channels.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-planed backboards, original joinery, age-related patination or micro-cracking in the black finish, and slight degradation or foxing in the mirror glass.

A large ebonised mirror serves as a high-contrast anchor when mounted against light neutral walls, positioned above sideboards, or placed over a fireplace mantel to reflect architectural light.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water and solvent-based chemicals. Clean the glass with a lightly damp cloth, applying liquid glass cleaner strictly to the cloth rather than directly onto the mirror edges.
