Large 19th Century Ebonised Italian Wall Mirror - No5

19th century
Description

We have been fortunate to get hold of some truly stunning 19th century Italian frames that we have added high quality 6mm mirror plate too.

These mirrors make incredible features on any wall in a great number of interiors. The design is arguably quite contemporary which is why I love this particular style of frame.

The moulding is incredibly fine and when I spoke to my restorer about these he informed me just how hard it is to make this moulding so it really is a testament to the crafts people of the time that created these.

This example is a large full ebonised frame with fine detailed moulding. Wonderful quality and the sheen to the ebonised finish is particularly nice.

129cm by 98cm

Can be hung either portrait or landscape

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century Italian ebonised mirrors frequently draw inspiration from 17th-century Northern European and Italian Baroque designs, featuring dark stained frames, intricate wave or ripple mouldings, and structured geometric outer profiles.

Frames were typically constructed from fine-grained dense hardwoods such as pearwood, fruitwood, or walnut, which were treated with iron-rich stains or dark dyes to imitate valuable natural ebony wood.

Authentic pieces generally show subtle wood shrinkage at the frame joints, hand-cut ripple mouldings, original backboards secured with old nails, and natural greyish oxidisation spots across the mirrored glass plate.

Designers position ebonised mirrors against pale or textured walls to create a strong graphic accent, often placing them above console tables, fire mantels, or sideboards to anchor the room.

The ebonised finish should be dusted regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and protected from direct heat sources. Liquid glass cleaners should be applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the mirror to prevent moisture from seeping into the wooden frame.
