Antique Georgian Mahogany Dressing Table Vanity Table

18th century
Description

A rare and highly unusual Georgian mahogany dressing table of elegant proportions, dating to around 1780. Beautifully designed and wonderfully practical, this exceptional piece combines refined Georgian craftsmanship with ingenious storage, making it as desirable today as it was over two centuries ago.

Constructed in beautifully figured solid mahogany, the dressing table features a shaped hinged lid which opens to reveal an adjustable original mirror surrounded by a thoughtfully arranged interior. The interior comprises four lidded compartments, open storage sections and divided trays for jewellery, letters or dressing accessories, all retaining their original Georgian character. The elegant fold-out side slides provide additional working surfaces, ideal for placing perfumes, cosmetics or candlesticks.

The table stands on fine square tapering legs united by an elegant shaped undertier, providing both strength and visual balance while offering additional display or storage space beneath. The restrained yet sophisticated design allows the quality of the mahogany timber to take centre stage.

This versatile piece would make a superb dressing table, vanity table, writing table or occasional table and would look equally at home in a bedroom, dressing room or luxury walk-in wardrobe. Genuine Georgian dressing tables of this quality and originality are rarely encountered, particularly examples retaining such an appealing and practical interior.

Condition

Excellent antique condition with age-related wear, marks and patination consistent with over 240 years of use. The mirror adjusts correctly, the compartments and side slides operate as intended and the table is strong, stable and ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian dressing tables, produced between 1714 and 1837, are characterised by symmetrical proportions, high-quality timber such as mahogany, and functional internal compartments often hidden beneath hinged lids.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, often incorporating brass hardware, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and silvered glass mirrors.

Authentic Georgian pieces exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, hand-carved dovetail joints, original brass hinges with slot-headed screws, and natural age-related shrinkage along wood grain lines.

A Georgian dressing table can serve as an elegant console in an entryway, a compact writing desk when closed, or a vanity in a primary bedroom suite alongside contemporary lighting.

Maintain mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft cloth, applying beeswax twice yearly along the grain, and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources or damp environments.
