Description

Circa 1900, west persia probably sarouk district.

not in the best shape,what I call country house shabby chic but still with a certain look this type of condition brings (my house is full of them) but is an authentic antique rug.

Twin basket of flowers design amongst medallions.

All over pile with wear,end losses, side cords reasonably good,hand washed,last images. Plenty of images of rug.

5 foot 4 inches by 3 foot 7 inches. 162cm X 110cm. Wool pile,cotton foundations with wefts dyed blue/black.

Sarouk rugs originate from the Markazi province in western Iran, specifically around the village of Saruk and the city of Arak. Produced heavily from the late 19th through the mid-20th century, these textiles became world-renowned for their exceptional weaving quality, dense pile, and distinctive floral patterns, often custom-made for Western export markets.

Traditional Sarouk rugs feature high-grade wool piles hand-knotted onto durable cotton warps and wefts. Weavers used asymmetrical Persian knots to achieve fine detail, applying vegetable and natural dyes to create rich indigo blues, deep terracottas, and muted greens.

Authentic Sarouk rugs display a thick, soft wool pile and a heavy, durable feel due to double-weft construction. They typically feature central floral medallions, detached floral sprays, and rich field colours, along with visible hand-drawn irregularities on the reverse side.
