Antique Victorian Burr Walnut Scalloped Lamp Side Table

19th century
Description

A beautiful antique Victorian burr walnut lamp table of outstanding colour and figure. The top is veneered in exceptionally well figured burr walnut displaying rich swirling grain patterns and deep warm tones throughout, all highlighted by a finely shaped scalloped edge.

The table stands on an elegant carved tripod base with distinctive open lyre-form supports and shaped cabriole legs terminating in scroll feet. The quality of the timber and craftsmanship is evident throughout, creating a piece that is both decorative and highly functional.

Originally intended as a lamp or occasional table, pieces such as this were designed to bring both practicality and elegance to Victorian drawing rooms. Today it would work equally well beside a sofa, as a centre lamp table or as a statement piece in a hallway or bedroom.

A particularly attractive example with exceptional burr walnut veneers and a wonderfully decorative silhouette.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian burr walnut side tables are distinguished by the use of highly figured root or burl veneer, often applied to shaped or scalloped tops. They typically incorporate turned pedestals, carved tripod bases, and cabriole legs reflecting mid-to-late nineteenth-century design preferences.

These tables were constructed using a solid timber substrate, typically pine or mahogany, over which thin decorative sheets of burr walnut veneer were book-matched and adhered. The pedestal legs and carved elements were turned and shaped from solid walnut or stained hardwood.

Authentic pieces feature period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails or hand-carved leg joints, along with uneven hand-saw marks on the underside. Look for natural patination, subtle shrinkage in the veneer, and period-correct brass castors or iron fixing screws beneath the tabletop.

Place the table alongside contemporary upholstered seating to create a balanced contrast between modern textiles and warm timber grains. Accent the tabletop with a minimalist brass reading lamp or structured ceramics to ground the intricate woodwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, following the direction of the grain. Apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year to nourish the timber, avoiding silicone sprays and direct exposure to sunlight or heat sources.
