A Sutherland table is a narrow drop-leaf occasional table created in the mid-nineteenth century, named after the Duchess of Sutherland. It was developed to provide a compact, portable surface that takes up minimal floor space when the hinged leaves are folded down.

Traditional Sutherland tables were predominantly crafted from high-grade timbers such as walnut, burr walnut veneer, and mahogany. They frequently incorporate turned wood supports, brass drop-leaf hinges, and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature an exceptionally slim central top section with deep drop leaves held up by swing-out gate legs or pivoting supports. Look for fine turned column legs, period joinery on the underside, and original ceramic or brass castors.

Due to its compact footprint and adjustable leaves, a Sutherland table functions exceptionally well as a side table beside an armchair or sofa. It can also sit flat against a narrow wall as a console table when fully folded.
