Late 19thc Burr Walnut Work Table Side Table C1880

Description

A remarkable late 19thC burr walnut work table or side table with fitted interior and drawer dating to c1880. The lid is burr walnut with a curving shape, crossbanded with kingwood between these features is a triple inlaid line of ebony and boxwood. The carved edge is ebonised.

The lid lifts to reveal the original magenta velvet lid lining and an elaborate interior. This interior has large and small compartments with the original magenta velvet lids. At the corners are four lidded compartments, and there are smaller divided compartments and unlidded ones. The little lids repeat the theme on top - burr walnut, line inlay and crossbanding. The circumference of the interior is finely finished with ebony and a repeat of the crossbanded kingwood, and ebony and boxwood inlay. The lids have tiny ivory knobs. The sides repeat the theme - burr walnut, crossbanding and inlay with curves which echo the shape of the lid.

The table stands on cabriole legs which are embellished with brass beading the length of the leg. There is a pull out mahogany lined drawer under the interior top. There are escutcheon openings for a key though no key is present. The top part of the lid lock is missing and has been infilled at some point with ebonised wood.

Even without a full working lock and key, this is a fine example of elegant and refined cabinet making. It is in excellent condition - no lifting or damage to the burr walnut and the interior is stunningly good.
