161 X 270cm Fine Antique Afshar Carpet

19th century
Description

A wonderful, tribal rug made with handspun wool and all natural dyes. The midnight blue field is covered in flowers and the weaver has cleverly arranged concentric diamonds through use of colour alone. Brick red corners are filled with multi coloured flowers and what looks like a row of rocket ships!. Finely woven and in great, original condition. The pile is a little flat but there are no significant repairs, with original side cords and even quite a bit of the original flat woven kilim ends. Lovely.

5'4" x 9'0"

Declaration

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Afshar carpets are traditionally hand-woven by the semi-nomadic Afshar tribe located primarily in south-eastern Iran near Kerman. They are renowned for their geometric medallion designs, rich colour palettes dominated by terracotta reds and deep blues, and durable wool construction.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation. Artisans historically used natural vegetable dyes extracted from plants, insects, and roots to create the distinct red, blue, and ochre hues.

Authentic Afshar rugs feature asymmetric or symmetric hand-knotted construction with slight irregularities in shape and pattern that reveal their handmade nature. Look for characteristic geometric lattice or stepped diamond medallion patterns, natural abrash colour variations, and a sturdy, dense wool pile.

An Afshar carpet anchors living spaces, dining areas, or studies by adding warmth, texture, and historical depth. Complement its deep navy and red tones with dark timber furniture, neutral walls, or contemporary leather seating for a balanced interior scheme.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush to prevent pile damage. Rotate the carpet annually to ensure even wear and light exposure, and address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and mild wool-safe detergent.
