Georgian Mahogany Pie Crust Tilt Top Table

18th century
Description

A superb Georgian mahogany tilt-top table in the Chippendale style, dating from the late 18th Century. It has a large, well figured top made from a single piece of mahogany with a with a finely carved piecrust edge. It stands on a turned baluster column with wrythen carving and three cabriole legs carved to the knee. The legs terminate in pad feet with matching carving and the original brass barrel wheels below.

It is an excellent quality piece with a lovely rich colour and patination and it is strong and sturdy with a good level top. The tilting mechanism is smooth with a strong catch. The table is slightly lower than a full size table but there are no signs that it has ever been lowered or reduced in height so we can only assume that it was either made to a shorter specification or it has had a rotating bird cage mechanism removed at some point.

It is in very good condition for its age. There are some minor signs of age, a few small surface marks but nothing detrimental and there are no major damages. It has been gently polished and displays beautifully and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the 18th century, these tables feature a raised, scalloped rim resembling a pie crust and a hinged top that rotates vertically to save space when placed against a wall.

These tables were primarily crafted from solid mahogany, featuring hand-carved edge details, turned central support columns, and tripod bases joined with hand-cut dovetails and brass or iron latches.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved edge moulding integrated directly into the timber surface, original iron catch mechanisms underneath, turned columns, and natural wood movement consistent with age.

The table functions as a side table beside seating, or the top can be tilted vertically to display the carved timber surface inside a room alcove.

Dust surfaces regularly with a soft cloth, apply beeswax sparingly once or twice a year, and store away from direct heat sources and sunlight to preserve the wood finish.
