19th century
Description

A charming early 19th century Regency period mahogany wine table, dating to circa 1810–1820, of elegant proportions and refined design.

A Regency wine table is a small, portable pedestal or tripod table dating from the early 19th century, designed primarily to hold drinks, candles, or small decorative items in a drawing room.

These tables were predominantly constructed from dense timbers such as Cuban or West Indian mahogany. They feature hand-lathe turned central pillars, dovetail joints on the leg attachments beneath the block, and hand-scalloped or moulded pie-crust rims.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved details, irregular hand-sawn underside marks, natural shrinkage across the grain on circular tops, and aged brass tilt-top latches or iron sub-plates beneath the central column.

A mahogany wine table functions as an accent piece beside an armchair or sofa, providing a surface for drinks or books while introducing warm timber tones to balance contemporary upholstery.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement and fading.
