Antique Georgian Oak Corner Cabinet

Description

A good Georgian oak corner cabinet constructed in two sections. Designed to fit neatly into a corner, with a pair of panelled doors to the upper section and a further cupboard below, enclosing shaped corner shelves throughout. The oak has a pleasing warm mid-brown colour with good variation across the timber and a naturally aged surface. The doors are fitted with fielded panels, while the lower section features simple crossbanded detailing which adds contrast to the front. The cabinet retains a good honest patina, with wear and character consistent with age and use.

Originating in the 18th century, Georgian corner cabinets were designed to utilise space efficiently in dining rooms and living areas. They feature classical proportions, fielded or panelled doors, and solid native timber construction such as oak or mahogany.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid oak, mahogany, or pine, using hand-cut dovetail joints and peg joinery. Internal shelving was typically made of pine or oak, set behind solid panelled or glazed doors with brass hardware.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-carved mouldings, and original brass escutcheons or hinges. Look for uneven drawer bottoms or backboards, as well as natural age-related shrinkage in the solid oak panels.
