Victorian Bow Fronted Chest of Drawers in Mahogany

19th century
Description

An antique mahogany bow-front chest of drawers with a compact, well-balanced form and rich figured timber across the façade. The arrangement follows a practical two-over-two layout, with two short upper drawers above two deeper long drawers, each fitted with round wooden knobs and small brass escutcheons. The curved drawer fronts give the chest a softer architectural profile, while the polished mahogany shows warm reddish-brown tones, darker figuring and surface variation consistent with age.

The chest stands on swept bracket feet with a shaped apron below, giving it a light stance regardless of its useful storage capacity. The drawer interiors are in pale secondary timber, with visible dovetail joints indicating traditional cabinet construction. Well suited to bedroom storage, a hallway, landing or sitting room, it offers the practicality of a classic antique chest while retaining enough restraint to sit comfortably alongside 20th-century furniture, leather seating, patterned textiles or a more layered country house interior.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian bow fronted chest of drawers features a gently curved convex front facade, produced during the nineteenth century in Britain. This design allowed maximum internal storage capacity while softening the visual lines within a room setting.

These pieces were typically constructed using solid pine or oak carcases covered with rich flame mahogany veneers. Drawer construction usually features hand-cut dovetail joints, cockbeading along drawer edges, and turned wooden or brass hardware.

Authentic pieces show period construction hallmarks such as hand-sawn drawer bottoms, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, and naturally aged timber oxidisation inside the drawers. Keyhole escutcheons are often bone, mother-of-pearl, or brass, accompanied by original iron locks.

Integrate the dark timber tones by pairing the chest with neutral wall shades, modern artwork, or brass lighting fixtures. The curved profile functions well in hallway entryways, dining areas, or master bedrooms.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the timber grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to avoid veneer cracking or fading.
