Limed Georgian Chest of Drawers with Original Handles & Bracket Feet

19th century
Description

an antique mahogany chest of drawers with a warm limed finish, original brass handles and bracket feet. The front is arranged with two short upper drawers above three long drawers, each framed by simple moulded edges and fitted with decorative pierced brass backplates, drop handles and matching escutcheons. The lighter surface brings out the grain and wear in the timber, giving the chest a softer, more relaxed appearance than a darker polished example.

The drawers are constructed with pale timber linings and visible dovetail joints, offering practical storage for clothing, linens or household pieces. A moulded top, straight sides and shaped bracket feet give the piece a restrained antique profile, while the brass fittings add a more decorative note across the façade. Its compact proportions make it well suited to bedroom storage, a hallway, landing or sitting room, where it can sit comfortably with country house furniture, textiles, ceramics and a layered mix of antique and 20th-century design.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian chests of drawers, produced between 1714 and 1830, are characterised by classical proportions, dovetail joint construction, and functional drawer arrangements, frequently featuring two short drawers positioned over three long drawers.

Craftsmen primarily used solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, and walnut, complemented by hand-cut dovetail joints, solid drawer linings, and cast brass hardware including batwing or swan-neck handle plates.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-sawn timber marks, uneven hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass backplates, and natural age-related wear to drawer runners and bracket feet.

Position the chest as a focal point in an entryway or bedroom, styling the top with clean-lined contemporary ceramics, a minimalist table lamp, or framed artwork to create visual balance between eras.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry soft cloth and applying a beeswax polish once or twice a year, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and humid environments.
