Victorian Gilt Wall Mirror in the Regency Style

19th century
Description

A good quality Victorian giltwood rectangular wall mirror in the Regency style with central sunburst design with circular bevelled glass mirror plate bordered by floral leaf design. The mirror is flanked with four fluted and burnished Corinthian column with further bevelled glass mirrors. There are applied Neoclassical figures to the inset top panels, and the frame is finished with balls to the top moulding.

The original mirror plates are in very good condition.

Height - 95.5 cm (37 ½ inches)

Width - 138.5 cm (54 ½ inches)

Depth - 8 cm (3 ¼ inches)

Circa - 1880

Regency Revival pieces from the late Victorian era incorporate classical Greek and Roman motifs popularised in the early nineteenth century. Common features include architectural cornices, ball moulding, fluted pilasters, and low-relief friezes depicting mythological or classical figures.

These mirrors were constructed using pine or lime wood frames covered with layers of gesso and clay bole. Hand-applied thin sheets of gold leaf were burnished over the surface, housing hand-cut mirror glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors demonstrate red or yellow clay bole showing through worn gold leaf, known as rub-through. Additional indicators include hand-planed timber backboards, irregular bevels on early glass plates, and visible joinery lines beneath the gesso structure.
