Pair of Antique Regency Period Brass Inlaid Mahogany and Leather Armchairs

19th century
Description

An exceptional pair of antique Regency period brass inlaid mahogany and leather armchairs. They were made in England, they date from the 1815-1830 period.

The quality is outstanding, they have a gorgeous design with lots of incredibly fine features. The solid mahogany frames are beautifully sculpted, with grooved armrests that scroll over and have carved rosettes on the sides. The Trafalgar shaped backs have amazing brass inlays with exquisite details, there are also brass inlaid details on the knees, and wonderful brass hairy paw feet caps. They are a lovely size and are very comfortable. The deep buttoned leather upholstery compliments the wood tones beautifully.

They would make very impressive accent chairs or side chairs around the home, they would also work well as desk chairs either side of a partners desk.

They are in superb condition for their age, having been recently polished and revived. They were re-upholstered at some point not too long ago, just enough time for the leather to start to acquire a lovely patina. The leather has a gorgeous colour tone, the wood has some signs of old wear and patina remaining here and there beneath the polish, commensurate for age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency period furniture, prominent in early 19th-century Britain, is characterised by classical Greek and Roman architectural influences, rich dark woods like mahogany, and detailed brass stringing or inlay.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid mahogany or rosewood frames, accented with cut-brass inlays, brass castors, and hand-tacked leather or woven cane upholstery.

Authentic pieces display fine brass stringing or marquetry set flush into dense flame mahogany, hand-carved details such as sabre legs or lion paw feet, and traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery.

Position these armchairs alongside a contemporary glass side table or within a minimalist study setting to create an eclectic contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Treat the leather periodically with specialised wax balm, polish brass fittings gently without harsh chemicals, and keep mahogany out of direct sunlight and away from central heating sources.
