Victorian Elm and Beech Oxford Bar Back Windsor Chair

19th century

Description

An interesting variation of a 19th-century beech and elm Oxford Windsor elbow chair. The back on this particular chair has three turned spindles and a saddle seat, turned legs, and an H-stretcher. These design markers are consistent with many chair manufacturers during the Victorian era in the High Wycombe area.

The condition is very good with a lovely, gently worn patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Oxford bar back Windsor chair is a traditional regional variation of the English Windsor chair, featuring a rectangular back frame with turned spindles and a horizontal rail, combined with a solid wooden saddle seat.

Victorian Windsor chairs were typically constructed using native British hardwoods, frequently pairing a solid shaped elm seat with turned beech or ash legs, spindles, and arm supports.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature solid wood construction with wedged joinery, turned components, natural grain variation in the elm seat, and signs of wear around the stretchers and armrests.

A Windsor chair functions as an accent chair beside a desk, at the head of a dining table, or as a standalone seating option in an entryway.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish occasionally, avoiding direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes.
