Antique Regency Mahogany Pembroke Table C.1820

19th century
Description

A fine Regency period mahogany Pembroke table, the well-figured extending top over a slim frieze with a single drawer, all raised on square reeded legs terminating in original brass castors and united by a beautifully shaped stretcher.

The narrow footprint when closed makes it easy to place against a wall in a hallway, living space or study, with the option to extend as required.

Very good antique condition, with a warm, aged patina and surface wear consistent with age. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place.

English, circa 1820.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency Pembroke table is a rectangular occasional table designed between roughly 1810 and 1830, featuring two drop-leaf flaps supported by folding wooden brackets. Named after the Countess of Pembroke, these tables were constructed with drawers at one or both ends for storeage and were used for light dining, writing, or tea serving.

Regency Pembroke tables were predominantly crafted from dense West Indian or South American mahogany, valued for its rich grain and stability. Construction features typically include hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, reeded or turned legs, brass caps and castors, and wooden rule joints connecting the drop flaps to the central top.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display signs of hand construction, such as irregular hand-cut drawer dovetails and uneven shrinkage in the solid wood top. Look for period-correct hardware, such as brass castors secured with screws, cast brass pull handles, and natural patination along the wooden edges and leg turnings.

A Pembroke table functions effectively as an end table beside a sofa, a compact desk in a bedroom, or an entryway console table. With its drop-leaf flaps lowered, it maintains a slender profile suitable for smaller spaces while providing additional surface area when extended.

Maintain antique mahogany by dusting regularly with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement, cracking, or fading of the original finish.
