Bakshaish Runner, North-west Persia, Circa 1890, 4.30m X 0.98m

19th century
Description

This is a very handsome Bakshaish runner in a long and narrow format. The field design is composed of three sapphire blue anchor medallions filled with botehs, which appear to float above a lovely abrashed terracotta field. The medallions are framed by rows of a geometric motif which resembles an ornament seen on Turkmen weaving. Narrow stylised floral borders frame this composition. Note the lovely apple green in the guard stripes, as well as the delightful yellows and light blues in the details. This is a very decorative runner which would work well in any number of settings, contemporary or traditional. Professionally cleaned, it has survived in generally good condition with just the right amount of wear to give it the elusive lived in look.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bakshaish rugs originate from the Heriz district of North-West Persia, renowned for their stylized geometric interpretations of classical Persian motifs and expansive design scales.

These rugs were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool foundation, coloured using traditional natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authenticity is indicated by subtle variations in knotting, natural dye abrash colour gradations, hand-wrapped selvedges, and age-consistent surface wear.

A long Persian runner provides structural definition, warmth, and grounding colour along hallways, entryways, or wide corridors alongside modern or period furniture.

Vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush, place a quality underlay beneath to minimise friction, and rotate periodically to distribute foot traffic evenly.
