Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the Victorian era, a toilet mirroralso known as a dressing table mirror or toilet glassis a standalone tabletop mirror designed to sit atop a chest of drawers, dressing table, or vanity surface. These pieces frequently featured an adjustable swinging glass supported by upright posts anchored to a timber plinth base containing small accessory drawers.

Victorian toilet mirrors were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often enhanced with flame mahogany veneers and gilt wood sight edges framing the silvered glass mirror plate. Drawers typically featured hand-cut dovetail joints, brass drop-ring handles, or brass escutcheon plates, while side brass knobs secured the swinging mechanism.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-turned upright supports with carved finials, original silvered mirror plates showing subtle age-related foxing, and fine hand-dovetailed drawer construction. Look for original brass swivel tension knobs on the sides and natural wear or oxidisation on the underside of the timber base.

Position the mirror atop an antique sideboard, modern chest of drawers, or vanity unit to create a focal point in a bedroom or dressing area. Pairing dark mahogany timber with soft linen textiles, contemporary brass lighting, or neutral wall paint balances traditional craftsmanship with a clean, contemporary aesthetic.

Preserve the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Avoid harsh glass cleaners on or near the timber frame to protect the gilt moulding and original finish, and keep the piece away from direct sunlight or damp environments.
