Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bonheur du jour is a type of ladys writing desk introduced in France during the 18th century. It features a flat or sloped writing surface topped by a raised cabinet or shelf arrangement containing small drawers, compartments, or glazed doors.

Craftsmen predominantly used solid walnut, mahogany, or oak for the core frame, covering surfaces with figured veneers such as burr walnut or kingwood. Inlays were executed using marquetry, complemented by cast brass or ormolu mounts and protective galleries.

Authentic pieces feature curved cabriole legs, asymmetrical floral marquetry, and hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers. Examining the underside for hand-sawn timber marks, natural wood shrinkage, and genuine patination on metal mounts helps verify age.

Place the desk against a neutral wall to highlight the intricate wood marquetry and curved silhouette. Pair it with a simple contemporary chair or minimalist modern lighting to create a refined focal point within a study or bedroom.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, wiping along the grain. Protect the surface from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying a high-grade beeswax paste once or twice a year to preserve the original finish.
