Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a French flat-topped writing table, originally introduced in the late seventeenth century, designed with frieze drawers and a leather writing surface. During the nineteenth century, revivals of the Louis XV style brought these double-sided, freestanding tables into prominent use across European libraries and drawing rooms.

These tables were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, veneered in figured walnut or burr walnut, and finished with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts. The upper writing surface frequently featured a tooled leather inset bordered by a brass or gilt rim.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples show signs of hand-grained drawer linings, dovetailed joints, and age-related patination on the underside of the timber. Look for cast gilt-bronze mounts with hand-chased detail and natural wear around the keyholes and leg corners.

Position the desk centrally within a home office or study to showcase its carved legs and mounts from all angles. Pair it with a contemporary minimalist desk chair or a classic upholstered armchair to create a functional workspace that balances historic character with modern utility.

Keep the timber lightly dusted and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain, taking care to avoid the metal mounts. Clean the leather surface with a soft, damp cloth and condition it periodically with specialized leather cream to prevent cracking.
