Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror, derived from the French word for horse due to its four-legged support frame, is a full-length mirror suspended between two upright posts. Popularised in the late eighteenth century, the design allows the glass frame to tilt to various angles for dressing purposes.

Cheval mirrors from the early twentieth century frequently feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine cores. Construction relies on mortise and tenon joinery for the outer uprights, turned finials, and brass pivot swivel fittings that secure the mirror frame.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved or turned timber details, natural oxidisation on original brass fittings, and age-related distressing or mild foxing to the silvered mirror glass backing. The timber underside often shows hand-cut mortise joints and original patina.

Place a freestanding cheval mirror in a master bedroom, dressing area, or hallway corner to add vertical scale and reflect light. Pair the dark mahogany tone with neutral walls, natural linen textiles, or modern minimalist accent furniture for a balanced look.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and polish occasionally using a beeswax paste, avoiding silicone sprays. Clean the mirror glass with a damp cloth or specialized glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly onto the glass to protect the backing.
