Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror, derived from the French word for horse due to its four legs, is a freestanding full-length mirror suspended within a frame that allows it to tilt. Developed in the late eighteenth century, it gained widespread popularity during the Regency and Victorian eras as an essential element of bedroom and dressing room furnishings.

High-quality historical examples were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often featuring cast brass hardware for tension adjusters and sconces. The mirror plates were originally made using mercury glass or early silvered glass, which often exhibits foxing and patination over time.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery, hand-turned support columns, and original brass fittings such as adjustable candle sconces or paw feet. Look for signs of age in the wood finish, natural oxidisation on brass components, and foxing or slight distortion in the original silvered mirror glass.

An antique cheval mirror functions as a focal point in a master bedroom, dressing area, or spacious hallway. Designers often place them near natural light sources to reflect ambient illumination throughout the room, pairing the warm wood tones with neutral wall palettes or heritage paint colours.

Dust the wood frame regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to preserve the original finish. Avoid spraying commercial glass cleaner directly onto historical mirror glass, as liquid can seep behind the frame and deteriorate the backing plate.
