Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror is a full-length dressing mirror suspended within a dual-upright frame, allowing the glass to tilt on central pivots. Originating in the late 18th century and widely produced during the Victorian era, the term derives from the French word for horse, referencing its four-legged base construction.

Victorian cheval mirrors were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often featuring flame mahogany veneers over pine core frames. The mirror plates utilised mercury glass or silvered float glass, set into curved frames supported by heavy scrolled uprights and plinth bases.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-cut joinery, heavy solid timber bases, and hand-cast brass friction knobs or brass pins on the pivots. The backboard is typically constructed from panelled softwoods showing hand-planing marks, and the original mirror glass often displays subtle silvering degradation or foxing.

Position a cheval mirror in a bedroom suite, dressing room, or spacious hallway to create depth and reflect natural light. The dark timber and classic curves provide a focal accent when contrasted against neutral walls or contemporary minimal furnishings.

Dust the timber framework with a clean, dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically in the direction of the wood grain. Avoid chemical sprays or moisture near the edges of the mirror glass to prevent dampness from reaching the backing or causing further desilvering.
