Antique Period Oak & Country Furniture 16thc Elizabethan Boarded Coffer. English C1560-80

16th century
Description

A superb 16thc Elizabethan "boarded" oak coffer....it has a good natural colour and size, not being too large and has attractive double line incised moulding to the top....it still retains the original shaped spandrels, iron ring hinges, lock and clasp....I particularly like the early feature of how the coffer is made with large iron clout nails fastening the boards together....very good condition for its age.

English C1560-80.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A boarded coffer is a traditional form of storage chest popular during the 16th century, constructed from solid wooden planks nailed or pegged together rather than framed panels.

These coffers were predominantly constructed from native English oak timber, held together with hand-forged iron nails or wooden dowels and fitted with iron lockplates and hinges.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, early iron strap or loop hinges, simple board construction, and natural surface wear consistent with centuries of use.

An early oak coffer serves as a functional statement piece at the foot of a bed, inside an entryway, or positioned behind a sofa to add historical texture to modern schemes.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity, dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying natural beeswax occasionally to protect the original patination.
