Antique Kilim, Qashqa'i Tribes, Fars Province, South-west Persia.

19th century
Description

I think this has to be one of my favourite Qashqa'i kilims of all time! Bold yet with subtle, vegetable colours throughout, it has a huge presence.

Made circa 1870-1880, no later, the kilim comprises diagonal bands of golden-yellow, rose-red, aubergine and a band woven in white cotton.

In very good condition albeit with a few minor areas of restoration, this is a fantastic kilim and has to be seen to appreciate the beauty in the colours. I love it!

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Qashqai kilim is a traditional flatweave textile handwoven by the nomadic Qashqai tribes of the Fars Province in South-West Persia. These rugs are renowned for their geometric diamond motifs, vibrant natural dyes, and durable slit-weave technique.

Tribal kilims are woven entirely from hand-spun wool for both the warp and the weft. The yarn is traditionally dyed using local plant and mineral sources, creating varied, organic colour tones throughout the weave.

Authentic pieces feature the classic slit-weave flatweave construction, geometric diamond or latch-hook motifs, end borders with woven bands, and subtle variations in dye colour known as abrash.

A Persian kilim works well placed over natural timber flooring or layered atop neutral sisal carpets. Its geometric patterns anchor living rooms, hallways, or dining spaces, adding textural interest to both modern minimalist and bohemian interiors.

Vacuum the kilim gently without a motorized beater bar to prevent snagging the flatweave structure. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, and professional cleaning by a specialist textile restorer is recommended when required.
